What’s in a name? Your destiny, that’s what.

So says Joan “Pepe” Applegate, a West Palm Beach woman who is writing a book on acrophonology, an ancient science that associates every letter in the alphabet with an astrological counterpart and defines each letter’s meaning through its placement in a word and in a name.

There are people who change their names to change their destiny, Applegate says. Examples can be found in the Bible. Saul was a man of violence until he changed his name to Paul.

Talk too much? Do friends have a hard time getting a word in edgewise when you’re around? Maybe you need to take one of the e’s out of your name. Applegate knows of someone who did just that.

The West Palm Beach woman, who has been studying acrophonology for decades, uses her nickname “Pepe” because it gives her energy, she says.

Raised in a seaside town in New Jersey, Applegate is known for her work as an astrologer and a psychic. As a child, she would know things before they would happen. Her father had the gift (psychic) gift, as well, she said. “He was very quiet about it. He didn’t want people beating down his door.”

She began studying astrology in the 1970s when a friend challenged her.

“I was really a very religious girl and that squashed my interest for 15 years,” the mother of four says. “But when that woman challenged me, I thought about it and ended up studying astrology. It changed my life. Now people tell me I change their lives.”

With the recent renewal of the hit reality show “Long Island Medium” with real life Psychic Medium Theresa Caputo, questions have arisen over the shows authenticity which have recently been answered head on in this Entertainment Weekly article.

Caputo: That’s correct. I’m not actually booking appointments at this time.

When did you first realize [being a medium] was something you could do?
Caputo: I’ve seen spirits since the age of four. I thought it was normal until I hit my teenage years and and sharing things with my friends and they said ‘that’s not normal.’ In my family it was normal, but to my friends it wasn’t. I started suffering from anxieties. In my late twenties I went to a spiritual healer and that’s when she told me was that a spirit was trying to communicate with me and that’s what caused a lot of my anxiety and aliments.

When you say you could see spirits. What does that look like?
Caputo: Well when I was younger I used to actually see images and hear things. As I got older and shut down, it had changed. Because it was frightening to see people standing there who actually weren’t there. So now it’s just like knowing it, it’s like second nature.

So when you’re getting information … is that verbal, is that visual? Help me understand physically what that’s like.
Caputo: I know it sounds crazy but I can’t explain it. It’s just there.

Most communication in these sort of exchanges is the deceased person reassuring the living. Are the dead ever angry at the person who’s still alive?
Caputo: I’ve never had that experience. I was taught and the way I choose to use my gift is I protect all my sessions in God’s white light. My rule is if they’re angry or they’re upset they’re not allowed to talk about it. If it can’t help us or prevent something, then I don’t want know about it. My wish for all my clients is that they receive the most healing or closure if they come, or just comfort, to continue to embrace their life without their loved ones.

On these shows, there’s conversations with the deceased, but the viewer doesn’t often get a sense of what the ‘other side’ is like. Do you have a sense of that?
Caputo: [Spirits] will bring me to like a park or a field or ponds, and then sometimes somebody will show me a beach or a brook. I don’t know if that’s exactly what it’s like. I say ‘I’ll find out when we get there.’ I can only tell you what they show me.

You’ll read random people on the street, but since the show came out you must have times when you’re trying to enjoy your privacy and people come up trying to get free readings. How do you respond to that?
Caputo: It just happened yesterday. I usually just throw a little something out there and just continue. People are usually very respectful. I’ve only had a handful of people say, ‘Oh can you tell me something.’

The last person to really make a splash in this space was John Edward, who was often accused of doing cold readings. What is your response to the skeptics?
Caputo: I’ve never had the privilege to meet John Edward but he had opened the door for mediums. He has laid a beautiful path for us. I would say to skeptics, just have the experience. I had somebody say on my Twitter account, ‘You’re so full of blah blah.’ I said, ‘That’s great, I value your opinion, but why don’t we do a reading on air and then see what you think before you start passing judgement.’

What’s season two going to be like, anything different?
Caputo: As far as I know it’s going to be the same. They just show up with the cameras. Because you can’t script what I do.
